Connected living is not a new story. MDE means a lot more than digital devices that work together. It means progress. One that has been in our consciousness for 50 years.

Since films with flying cars were in movie theaters, we've imagined seamless, digitally augmented lives where technology meets our everyday needs, wants and desires wherever we are.

Now Connected Living is a reality that goes deeper. Beyond technological progress Connected Living represents an expectation. Because of that, our storytelling needs to go deeper than features and benefits education. Connected Living should connect the things and people that we care about more deeply than ever. It should help us express our personality in the ways we customize our connected experiences. It should be sustainable and efficient.

This case study will highlight a platform based retail experience that was designed to highlight certain Samsung devices and lifestyle opportunities that connected living provides.

Complexity made simple

The idea of a connected ecosystem of devices can feel complex and hard to communicate, but doesn’t have to be. We needed to reduce connected living to a simple idea that anyone can approach.

We start with a symbol

The “+” symbol is one of the most understood icons on the planet. It represents connection, part of a larger equation & positivity. It is a call to action for people to try connected living in the store and an invitation to customize their own ecosystem.

By intelligently and seamlessly connecting your Samsung devices, you create what didn't exist before, enabling you to customize and superpower your passions. You get more options, more control, more possibilities and more savings. Add more to make the most of what you love.

Sustainably made

Materials follow In-store design standards to ensure harmonious integration, but with an increased emphasis on visibly sustainable materials. Darker palette choices across the space offer contrasts that can draw focus to the screens where we want people to try the devices.

Welcome to the new MDE (Multi Device Experience) connected living store space.

Using the “+” symbol as a motif throughout the space, including in the canopy structure, it's designed to engage shoppers through their journey. Scale both up and down to different store sizes.

Mapping the journey

It’s a simple physical ‘funnel’ which allows the experience to be right time right place for all visitors as they move towards and within it. Getting them ready to take the experience home with them.

Attract

Video walls that won’t quit. From a distance, a vivid animation is displayed on a large video wall. As the video loops, the user views a simple visual story of interests being supercharged by connecting devices together and creating more immersive experiences through Connected Living.

Visual Direction

Our graphic language and motion design for Attract mode is a simple equation; People + Passion + Device + Device. People and their passions are dynamically cropped to feel closer, healthier, moodier and more productive. Products are Drawn together, punched out and connected with a Plus “+”. The palette communicates richness and breadth of different passions.

Engage

As the user approaches the bamboo floored entrance, they see a large touch screen with a simple call to action, “Do more of what you love” prompting them to make a selection. Once a category is selected, matching obelisks illuminate throughout the store inviting them to investigate on their own.

Interact

As the user investigates the illuminated obelisk’s, they are invited to pick up a device and further explore. In this example, they travel through a series of fitness screens which demonstrate adding different devices to elevate their experience. SmartThings begin to take action, the television changes, interior blinds close, and lighting dims. The user is prompted to pickup the watch to enhance the experience.

Connect + Studio

In the space is a table with an interactive touch screen surface. It’s a place where store associates gather and ask users if they need help. Associates can engage with users to discover where their interest in connecting living starts and guide them on the touch screen table.

Visual Direction

Borrowing visual language from our video walls and attract loops, The user or associate can interact to build and create their own connected bundle with devices they may already own combined with devices they may still need to purchase.

By connecting people and their passions via the touch screen the user is able to draw their own connected future together continuing our theme of Plus “+”.
